RIFT RULES

Our Goal

Our game was based around the idea of letting creativity be unleashed and both inspiring and driving character development through writing. We strive to have a mature community of players that can feel free to branch off from their 'norm' in a totally judgment free environment. The idea of essences in the game is to help players write in a world that is always changing with events that come and go. Our dream was to take all the fun and adventure of video games that make them addicting and apply some of the game play premises to a writing driven game.

General Guidelines

-Please respect other players (including owners and staff) and all of their characters. We understand not all characters will get along, but please keep in mind players and their characters are totally different.
-Every decision that any of the owners makes is final. There are no negations with this.
-The golden rule applies in this game (as it should everywhere in life).
-This game is rated R. All mature topics are allowed but graphic sexual content is never tolerated.
-Please try not to join more characters than you can handle.
-All levels of players are welcome to join. We welcome and encourage exploration and improvement from writers of all levels.
-There is ZERO tolerance for OOC drama. Do it and you're gone. Any past grudges stay in the past.

Gameplay

-There is no word count. Just don't be a jerk and respond to a huge post with two sentences. Following a two paragraph rule is normally a good guideline. This game is made to encourage fast-moving threads and numerous plots (both in-game and personal).
-Any board that will be changing depending on how time decides to move will be time stamped.
-If any player has a game wide plot or event idea we are always willing to listen. We love ideas!
-No character NEEDS to have a home. They are welcome to wander.
-There is no need to quit a character in this game. Once joined it is always in our database and you are free to play them as you like. No need to re-join. You may also find new players for characters.
-There are no boundaries between any land unless stated otherwise.
-Always remember time is unstable and liquid in this game. Nothing stays the same.

Character Creation

- Register with your OOC name first, after which register with your character account
- Only humans are allowed. Your human may be a witch as an occupation, but not as a species. No werewolves/vampires/elves/etc., though shifting (and other similar powers) may be earned in-game.
- Your character may haves some features that include: any skin color, tattoos, odd skin effects and other traits that have no real physical impact. If you're unsure just as a staff member.
- Because of the strange time and magic of the Riftlands, your character may come from any point in history/fantasy. A cowboy from the wild west? Sure. A Viking or a druid or a hipster millennial? Bring it on.
- Characters that have existed before can come to this game from any part of their past or where they are currently, due to the instabilities of time.
- Your character can find the Riftlands in any way that works for your muse. Dream, beamed in , wormhole, wandered in – it’s all a go.
- Characters can age however they like in this game, though they are not immortal and can still be killed.
- You may have a ‘companion’ animal (dog, cat, hawk, horse, etc) but unless you purchase magic for them, they are ‘normal’ and unable to communicate verbally/telepathically.
- You may join with a weapon (sword, knife, gun, etc) but any magical properties of the weapon must be purchased in-game.
- You must wait to be accepted to post.
- There may be an event where your character could die in-game. If your character ‘wins’ a death lottery, you will be notified for your permission. You can turn down the opportunity, but characters can be reborn in-game (because of the instabilities of time and magic) and you will be awarded XX Coins to your OOC account.

Magic

- Players do not join with magic, but it may be purchased in the shop.
- Magic does not work within the walls of the citadel; the queen controls all of it within the iron city. If you try anything, she may find out.
- Magic can be purchased with coins earned through posting, events, or various ooc measures (advertising, helping someone with html, etc)
- Even if you have high-level magic, you must have a player’s permission to maim/kill their character (obviously)
- See below on a breakdown of the two types of magic.

In-Game Currency

- The currency in-game is called Iron Coins. Joining, posting, and other activities will earn you coins.
- Some coins are earned automatically (posting) while others you must notify staff of to earn (referring a player, helping someone with HTML, etc).
- Coins are used to purchase things in the Shop.
- Eventually, ‘theft’ and ‘raids’ will become a possibility, where characters may attempt to rob another for coins.

Events

- Events are an opportunity to earn Coins, and occasionally other abilities/items/perks.
- There will be a post with a prompt and your character can respond accordingly.
- A dice roll will follow to determine the outcome (each number’s meaning will be described in the event itself).
- A “coin purse” can be purchased in the shop. This gives characters an extra roll for each event they respond to.

'Low' vs. 'High' Magic

There are two kinds of magic available for purchase.
Small, or ‘lesser,’ magic, the kind that isn’t truly a threat, that only makes a difference to a few. The ability to start a fire without tinder or matches; the ability to find water and draw it forth; the ability to find rare herbs or coax plants back from the brink of death in fall for long enough to make use of them. Perhaps the ability to shift one’s eyes into a hawk’s, to better see - or one’s hands into claws, to better fight. Maybe it allows you to glimpse into another’s thoughts, and see their true mood.

And then there is big magic, powerful magic, ‘high’ magic - the kind that brings storms, shatters structures with ice, lets you shift into a beast (and live that way, if you must, or if you lose yourself). The kind that lets you put thoughts into another’s head, and when they follow them they think it’s their own decisions they’re making.

Each magic purchase is good for one discipline; i.e. fire or shifting or telepathy. You must make a new purchase for each ‘type’ of magic.
